Addiction Knows no Bounds

In 1999, the BBC reported on an area in the United Kingdom where heroin addiction was so rampant that even an eight-year-old boy had become addicted to the substance. The tragic story also told of a 17-year-old who only survived his overdose because medical professionals arrived in time to save his life.

This story illustrates a sad truth that many drug rehab specialists know all too well: there are no bounds to addiction. People of any background can become addicted, though there are many factors that can increase one’s chances for addiction, such as having other family members who abuse drugs or suffering from mental health issues.

These risk factors greatly increase one’s chances for becoming addicted to drugs or alcohol—in fact, studies by the National Institutes of Health have found that children of drug abusers are “45 to 79 percent more likely to abuse drugs themselves than the general population.”

The sad truth is that there are many people from all walks of life that may be in need of drug rehab. Addiction does not discriminate. Regardless of age, socioeconomic background, or any other factor, addiction can become an overwhelming part of someone’s life if they are not careful. If you or someone you know is addicted, don’t hesitate to seek help through professional treatment. Recovery is possible.
