A dual diagnosis program is beneficial for patients who struggle with addiction because of a pre-existing mental disorder, or vice-versa. Approximately 50 percent of people who are affected by mental illness will have a substance use disorder (SUD). It is estimated that 90 percent of people who struggle with substance abuse will most likely have some form of mental health disorder.
It is possible for the underlying mental health issues to exist prior to the onset of addiction, or the issues may have developed due to prolonged substance abuse. No matter what, the conditions need to be properly addressed and treated if the person is going to have a chance to live a normal, addiction-free life.
At Miramar Recovery, we provide dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring disorders. Our Orange County treatment center provides 24/7 care and offers several programs that address both our patient’s mental health and substance abuse. Our highly trained staff works with our patients to create an individualized treatment plan that is specialized for their needs. The team at Miramar are fully licensed and capable individuals who can treat co-occurring conditions such as:
These mental disorders can lead to drug and alcohol abuse as a way of self-medicating. Our Newport Beach recovery center provides substance abuse treatment alongside therapy programs. By treating both the mental disorder and addiction, patients can learn how to live a healthy life effectively.
Miramar Recovery has one of the most respected and trusted dual diagnosis programs in the industry. Upon admission to our program, our clients undergo a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Our consulting psychiatrist will then assess and edit all existing medications as needed. They will then prescribe medication that is more effective in helping that patient’s mental health condition.
Throughout the recovery process, our patients will continue to have follow-up sessions with the psychiatrist. By doing this, they can evaluate the effectiveness of the medications that the patient is on and change them if needed. Additionally, our clients undergo a comprehensive biological-psychological- social evaluation with one of our program psychologists. Doing this allows our team to treat whichever co-occurring conditions are present effectively.
It can be challenging to determine if a co-occurring disorder is present due to the many combinations of a dual diagnosis. To determine if patients are at risk, clinics have begun to use drug and alcohol screening tools.
Symptoms for a co-occurring disorder may include:
Our dual diagnosis treatment center in Orange County looks for these symptoms during the assessment process. Afterward, we decide what the best course of treatment will be for the patient. The treatment plan can be altered as time goes on, which will better accommodate the patient’s progress during the program.
Treatment for dual diagnosis includes each client receiving a minimum of 2-3 individual therapy sessions each week throughout the treatment period. These sessions will help to identify the underlying and unresolved issues that so commonly drive addiction and create co-occurring disorders. The problems that started their addiction are addressed, and with the therapist, begin to be resolved.
In addition to individual therapy, our program includes 2-3 small group sessions. These support groups are productive towards recovery as they provide an encouraging environment for all of our patients. Creating a sense of community helps them realize that they are not alone in their struggle. Our educational group sessions are designed to motivate our patients. By setting and achieving goals for themselves, they can create a strong foundation to build a sober life for themselves.
Each of our clients may undergo an initial nutritional evaluation by our registered dietitian, as well as follow up sessions. We are thereby ensuring that our clients understand and enjoy proper dietary habits. Miramar Recovery has two exceptionally talented chefs who prepare clean, nutritious, and appealing meals for our patients.
We also utilize a massage therapist, acupuncturist, activities therapist, and other adjunct treatment providers to aid in the healing process of those with a dual-diagnosis. Due to Covid, these services may be limited.
